ShelterTech is an all-volunteer non-profit that builds technology products for and with people experiencing homelessness. Our founder, Darcel Jackson, experienced homelessness himself and founded ShelterTech because, when he was unhoused, he “had a smartphone and could find wi-fi, but there weren't any apps or websites to help me get off the street.” To help bridge the digital divide, ShelterTech wires homeless shelters and transitional housing facilities with free wifi, and builds and maintains a resource database of social services available in San Francisco, called AskDarcel. In all its work, ShelterTech centers the voices and needs of those with lived experience of homelessness, hiring community representatives to update AskDarcel and hosting events to bring together the homeless and tech communities.
